Indonesia China Ban

"China and Indonesia were on the verge of a serious trade dispute on Monday as Jakarta demanded Beijing formally explain the ban it imposed on Indonesian fish and shellfish after Indonesia had criticised the safety of Chinese cosmetics and toys."

"Indonesian aquatic product exports to China last year totalled $70.3m (€51m, £34.5m). Total trade in 2006 between the two nations was $14.9bn, with $8.3bn comprising Indonesian exports to China and $6.6bn in goods going in the other direction"

On the impact of the Chinese ban, Numberi said Indonesia`s biggest market for its fishery products were the United Sates and European countries.

Chinese products including toothpaste, toys, tires and fish are under increased scrutiny worldwide and have been banned in some countries after being found to be tainted or otherwise unsafe.
